Fun Twig Furniture
Anne Cox got started making twig fences 10 years ago, when she decided to build a fence around Hedgerow’s first raised-bed vegetable garden. She used alder, which made it possible to create something decidedly — and delightfully — Art Nouveau in flavor. Our friend Gail Montgomery flipped out when she saw this fence and asked Anne to build one for her garden at the Well- Tempered Kitchen on Route 1 in Waldoboro. Alas, alder doesn’t last very long and within about four years both fences were beginning to fall apart. By this time Anne had moved on to using much more durable maple for her fences and for the tall ladder-back chairs and intricate twig benches she had begun making. So she replaced Gail’s alder fence with one made out of maple — and replaced Hedgerow’s fence with a rock wall!
Today, Hedgerow’s studio gallery showcases Anne Cox’s one-of-a-kind — often playfully quirky — rustic furniture suitable for indoor settings. Last year she began providing original hooked seats for rustic stools. Cox also makes chairs, benches, and trellises appropriate for outdoor use. Her arbors, gates and special gestural elements are usually designed for specific settings and, often, special occasions such as weddings.
