Fine Gardening

Based on the St. George peninsula, Hedgerow specializes in fine gardening and creative landscape design for the coast of Maine. Co-owners Anne Cox and Julie Wortman have been designing, installing and maintaining a wide range of gardens and landscapes in midcoast Maine since 2003 (Cox since 1998).

Cox is the company’s principal designer and horticultural expert (MLA, University of Michigan, 1984), while Wortman’s graduate background in history of art, architecture and historic preservation adds an extra dimension to the company’s aesthetic vision. The two specialize both in working with the deep structure of a site and in creating designs that imaginatively bridge the boundary between the cultivated and the wild.

Cox and Wortman are proud of the Hedgerow crew: Laura Bly, Ingrid Cook, Adam Fearing, Antonia Small and Joan Small (the Smalls are not related). These hardworking individuals are energetic, positive and quality conscious — and much of the reason Hedgerow enjoys a strong reputation for attention to detail and an approach to landscaping that is both fun-loving and creative.

Finally, longtime Hedgerow associate Doug Gammon provides the company with valuable and very skilled assistance whenever big equipment work is called for. He is truly an artist when it comes to operating an excavator!
